    Month: August 2015

On Sunday September 20 at 5:30 SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE OPERA returns for another season with a program titled HOLLYWOOD GOES TO THE OPERA!

Once again the popular singers and pianists of Boston-based Opera-On-Tap will present a three-act program of arias, ensembles, musicals and  songs. But this time these numbers will be drawn from the legendary films of the past, from the silent era to Citizen Kane to Diva.

The celluloid arts have had a long association with classical music, from the early filmed perfomances of Enrico Caruso to the 1950’s musicals of Mario Lanza. There have been many less-traditional takes, such as Bugs Bunny’s animated attacks on Wagner and Rossini, or the bewitching Mad Scene of Lucia di Lammermoor from the science fiction movie The Fifth Element.

Who can think of La Boheme without remembering the movie Moonstruck? Or the ravishing Letter Duet from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro without harkening to that special scene from Shawshank Redemption? Even the Marx Brothers got into the act, when their comic pranks threatened to undo a performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore in A Night At The Opera!

The program will include selections from Carmen, La Traviata and La Boheme, as well as Broadway’s Oklahoma, Little Women, Beauty and the Beast, Showboat, Carousel and Calamity Jane.

Our cast features four veterans from Boston-based Opera-On-Tap: Soprano Rachele Schmiege, Mezzo-soprano Valerie Osborn, Baritone Seth Grondin and Pianist Jessica Rucinski. In addition we welcome the Stellina debut of Tenor Stefan Barner.

In between the musical interludes Stellina will once again serve a three-course family-style Italian dinner, drawing upon the best that the season has to offer.

It’s the height of the harvest, so you can count on platters of locally-grown Heirloom tomatoes garnished with Westfield Farm’s super-fresh goat cheese. There will be bowls of fresh pasta tossed with the latest farm-stand vegetables, tender braised veal and the freshest seafood from Gloucester and Cape Cod.
