    Month: October 2017

Loyal friends of Stellina know that for years (decades, actually) Stellina sponsored a variety of Jazz-related evenings, including concerts by acclaimed pianist Yoko Miwa, and most prominently a long-running series of weekly Jazz Nights featuring the Noteworthy Jazz Quartet.  These evenings included guest appearances by a number of younger artists eager to practice their talents in front of an enthusiastic and knowledegeable clientele.

For ONE NIGHT ONLY jazz returns to Stellina, when on WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25 at 6:00 we welcome “LITTLE BLUE WAVES”.

The group consists of guitarist VIOLA MONOVICH, pianist MADELINE KITCH, bassist PHOEBE DERBA and flautist/alto saxophonist HONOR HACKMAN. The band members are currently 10th and 11th graders at Belmont High School. They have studied at Berklee School of Music, New England Conservatory, Powers Music School, Rivers Conservatory and Belmont High (currently rated as one of the top high schools for music in the country). All of the members of the band are interested in pursuing their interests in music after High School.

“Jazz is a unique and important opportunity for self-expression and cultural connection because it has so many layers as a music form and as an historical narrative. Our bans combines new collaborative musical expression with the rich history of Jazz.”– Viola Monovich

The name “Little Blue Waves” is a composite of thee of their favorite jazz standards: Little Sunflower by Freddie Hubbard, Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham and Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Their set list for this date will include St Thomas by Sonny Rollins, Cottontail by Duke Ellington, Along Came Betty by Benny Golson and All The Things You Are by Jerome Kern.

Little Blue Waves will play two complete sets, with the first one at 6:00. There is no cover charge, and all food and beverages are a la carte. Reservations are strongly suggested. Call 617-924-9475 to insure prompt confirmation of your seating, and make sure to specify that you are interested in the Jazz performance.
