    Month: March 2019

On Sunday May 5 at 5:30, SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE OPERA returns with a program dedicated to some of our very favorite artistes, THE GREAT DIVAS!

In our modern world the term “DIVA” has become over-used and misunderstood. Some think it refers to an attitude or to preposterous behavior that is decidedly over-the-top. But here at Stellina it means only one thing: THE GREATEST STARS OF CLASSICAL OPERA!

Luckily, we have the real-life stars of Boston’s OPERA-ON-TAP to show us what being a DIVA is all about. And as always their program will deliver the goods, with the finest music by the world’s greatest composers, sung beautifully, imaginatively and with the spirit of generosity that we’ve come to expect from Opera-On-Tap over the years.

The evening will follow our usual format, with three sets of live music interrupted only by three courses of first-class cuisine, served family style in an informal atmosphere.

Cost for Sunday Night at the Opera is $60/pp. This includes all food and entertainment. Please make your reservations by calling the restaurant in person at 617-924-9475. This will insure prompt confirmation of your reservation.
    CAST
    Sol Kim Bentley (soprano)
    Lindsay Conrad (soprano)
    Melynda Davis (soprano)
    Sylvia Leith (mezzo)

The evening’s program includes an amazing range of music dating from the 1750’s to the 1950’s, dedicated to Divas from every generation. The singers have included many of their, and undoubtedly your, favorites.

“Aux languers d’apollon” from Platee (by Rameau)
Sophie Arnould, one of the first famous French opera singers
    Lindsay Conrad

“Che faro senza Euridice” from Orfeo ed Euridice (Gluck)
A staple sung by every mezzo diva
    Sylvia Leith

“Come scoglio” from Cosi fan tutte (Mozart)
Mozart’s leading lady and powerhouse, Fiordiligi
    Sol Kim Bentley

“Sull’aria” from Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart)
One of the most iconic women duets, sung by almost every diva
    Melynda Davis & Lindsay Conrad

    “Vissi d’arte” from Tosca (Puccini)
From the opera about an actual diva!
    Melynda Davis

    “Je dis” from Carmen (Bizet)
Another staple in any diva’s repertoire
    Sol Kim Bentley

    “Vieni t’affretta” from Macbeth (Verdi)
Made extra famous by Maria Callas, Lady Macbeth is a diva of opera and a diva of theater put together!
    Lindsay Conrad

Pirate Jenny from The Threepenny Opera (Weill)
A new kind of “diva” that wasn’t afraid to be a little bit “ugly.” Also made famous by a Nina Simone cover!
    Sylvia Leith

“Si chiamano Mimi” from La Boheme (Puccini)
The ultimate aria from the ultimate opera. My favorite version is by Mirella Freni!
    Sol Kim Bentley

“What a Movie!” from Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein) An hilarious and powerful aria by one of Bernstein’s favorite operas   Sylvia Leith

“My man’s gone now” from Porgy and Bess (Gershwin)
A trailblazer of it’s time, and absolutely beautiful aria
    Melynda Davis

Barcarolle (duet) from The Tales of Hoffman (Offenbach)
Possibly one of the most famous opera duets in the world
Sol Kim Bentley & Sylvia Leith
