    Month: December 2019

It’s going to be a night to remember on WEDNESDAY JANUARY 29 at 6:30 when AUTHOR’S NIGHT welcomes an encore performance from one of our most popular authors, GERALD ELIAS. The renowned violinist, conductor, lecturer and author returns with not one, but two new books to share.

Gerald will present a reading of his first children’s book MAESTRO, THE POTBELLIED PIG. It’s an endearing story of a young harpist whose loneliness from practicing is cured by a music-loving, rambunctious little pig. (Hint: It’s actually based on the true story of a fellow BSO violinist) This reading will be accompanied by music performed by harpist Franziska Huhn, who also performed the music on the book’s audio version.

Gerald’s second book is a new edition of SYMPHONIES & SCORPIONS: AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERT TOUR AS AN INSTRUMENT OF CITIZEN DIPLOMACY. This is a chronicle of the BSO’s 2014 tour of China and Japan, talking about everything from Chinese-American relations to ho musicians pack their traveling trunks.

AUTHOR’S NIGHT IS A FREE EVENT, OFFERING AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY READINGS AND DISCUSSION FROM LEADING WRITERS IN ALL GENRES. A CASH BAR IS AVAILABLE FOR OUR GUESTS.

    DINNER WITH THE AUTHOR:

The evening continues after the reading is over with DINNER WITH THE AUTHOR. Continue the conversation over cocktails, appetizers, entrees and dessert. All food and beverage is a la carte, and there are no additional charges. We do, however suggest making reservations in advance to insure prompt seating.

    ABOUT GERALD ELIAS:

Gerald Elias is a true Renaissance Man, an acclaimed author, musician, and much more.

An award-winning author, he is perhaps best known for his Daniel Jacobus mystery series, which takes place in the dark corners of the classical music world and has won extensive critical praise. His essays and short stories have been published in a growing number of diverse and distinguished anthologies and online journals, including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Sherlock Holmes Magazine, Level Best anthologies, Reichel arts blog, Berkshire Magazine and Opera magazine.

A violinist with the Boston Symphony and associate concertmaster of the Utah Symphony, Elias has performed on five continents as violinist, conductor, composer and teacher. Since 2004 he has been music director of the Vivaldi by Candlelight concerts in Salt Lake City, and continues to perform with the Boston Symphony at their Tanglewood summer festival.

A native New Yorker, Elias resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, and West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he continues to expand his musical and literary horizons.

Cassandra is a talented harp player in a symphony orchestra. When she becomes lonely practicing her music, she comes up with the perfect solution. A music-loving pet potbellied pig, who she names Maestro! But as the rambunctious Maestro grows (and grows) Cassandra has a challenge on her hands. Will she have to say good-bye to Maestro forever? Or will Cassandra’s problem-solving skills help her find a happy-ever-after solution? The enchanting story of “Maestro, the Potbellied Pig,” by violinist and author Gerald Elias, is now also available as an audiobook at Audible.com, with beautiful music accompanying the magical narration of Alison Larkin.

“A thoroughly enjoyable story! Congratulations!” Ann Pilot, former principal harp, Boston Symphony Orchestra

“…an amazing journey…nothing less than a musical odyssey of discovery,” -iBerkshires

In Symphonies and Scorpions you’ll get an insider’s view of the glamour and the drudgery of an international concert tour to China and Japan, and gain deep insight into music as an instrument of citizen diplomacy. You’ll sit on the hallowed stage of Symphony Hall in Boston and in concert halls in Asia, meeting congenial and occasionally cantankerous colleagues, listening to the Maestro’s words of debated wisdom. You’ll fly nonstop from Boston to Tokyo, dine on succulent Peking duck, squirm through Beijing alleys crowded with scorpion vendors, and be spiritually restored in a Tokyo park floating in tranquility.

This second, enhanced edition of Symphonies & Scorpions adds Elias’s prize-winning essay, “War & Peace. And Music,” featured in his TEDxSaltLakeCity performance of September, 2019. A preface to the new edition also tackles the tumultuous issue of sexual misconduct by luminaries in the classical music world. This painstakingly revised edition is a must not only for music lovers but also for anyone interested in understanding and enriching human relations at home and abroad.

“…it will be music that saves humanity from the wanton cruelty we seem determined to inflict upon each other,”

suggests author and musician Gerald Elias. Performing his award-winning essay “War and Peace. And Music,” at TEDxSaltLakeCity, Elias explores how musicians frequently play the role of goodwill cultural ambassador and how music has a unique ability to inform, to teach, and to heal.
