In June and July we’ve enjoyed a series of Wine Tastings at Stellina, subtitled “Under the Stars”, dedicated to discovering wines that are particularly well-suited to accompanying grilled and other summer-styled foods.

This series finishes on a very high note on Monday August 4th at 6:30, with a tasting of the exceptional white and red wines from Terradora di Paolo, from Campania, Italy. All of their wines have scored highly, especially their legendary Taurasi which garnered a 95 from Robert Parker.

The highlight of the event will be the appearance of a member of Terradora’s award-winning winemaking team. The winemaker will present each wine, and be avaiable for questions and discussion throughout the tasting.

“The Barolo of the South”

If you’re a regular at the Stellina tastings you already know the amazing story behind Terradora vineyards. The winery is the brainchild of members of the famous Mastroberardino family, a clan that singlehandedly raised the profile of southern Italian wines to international status.

Chief among their successes was the creation of Taurasi, nicknamed the “Barolo of the South” for its dark, rich color, complexity and depth. Taurasi is made from 100% Aglianico grapes grown in the volcanic soil of the region surrounding Italy’s famous Mt. Vesuvius.

The unique terroir of this region, combined with the constant warmth of the Italian sun, calls for special skills and decades of experience. We’ll be able to compare the Taurasi with a younger 100% Aglianico side-by-side, to see the difference that aging imparts

Campania is also famous for some exceptional white wines, perfect for pairing with seafood, salads and Mediterranean specialties. All are dry, firm-bodied whites, some showing hints of almonds, olives, herbs and citrus. We’ll try three: Falanghina, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo.

To accompany these we’ll serve tasting appetizers, delicacies designed to show the wines to their best advantage.
