SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE OPERA begins another season on SUNDAY JANUARY 29 at 5:30 with an ALL-ITALIAN program as we celebrate a “FESTIVAL IN ABRUZZI! 

Located just east of Rome, along the shores of the Adriatic, the province of Abruzzi is a land of contrasts: soaring mountains, ancient castles and golden beaches. It’s also home to one of the most enthusiastic food festivals of the year, the annual tribute to Sant’ Antonio Abate held every January.

Strategically positioned on the calendar, the Feast of San Antonio gives everyone in the countryside one last chance to party before the Lenten season begins. The streets are full or revelers and platters of sausages, mounds of creamy polenta, giant wheels of cheese and tantalizing sweets are put out for everyone to enjoy.

Sunday Night at the Opera will recreate the mood of the festival with an ALL-ITALIAN musical program and a three-course menu reflecting the diversity of the Abruzzi region.

The singers of OPERA-ON-TAP/BOSTON, under the leadership of Soprano Abigail Krawson, will present three sets of vocal music drawn primarily from the Italian songbook. Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and other prominent composers will be represented in arias, ensembles and songs.

In between each set we will serve family-style portions of La cucina abruzzese including platters of Antipasto, Baked Haddock with Spinach and Saffron, steaming bowls of Broccoli-flavored Polenta topped with Marcella Hazan’s favorite tomato sauce and sausages, and the region’s famous Chitarra pasta tossed with Winter Greens, Chickpeas and Pecorino cheese.

For dessert we’ll take advantage of Abruzzi’s favorite liqueur to create our own homemade Limoncello Tiramisu with lemon-scented ladyfingers and creamy mascarpone cheese.
