Join Stellina and the performers from Boston’s Opera-On-Tap for a very special anniversary on Sunday May 6 at 5:30, as Sunday Night at the Opera celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with a program designed around the compositions, style and favorite composers of one of America’s most famous musicians.

Included in the evening’s program will be both classical and popular compositions by Bernstein, including a scene from the opera Trouble In Tahiti which was given its World Premiere at Brandeis University in 1952. Also arias from operas conducted by Bernstein and songs by composers closely associated with him.

A son of the State of Massachusetts, born in Lawrence in 1918, Bernstein always maintained a strong tie to his mother state. In addition to graduating from Harvard, he had lifelong affiliations with the Boston Symphony, Tanglewood Festival and Brandeis University.

It’s difficult to point to only one highlight in Bernstein’s long career as a conductor, composer and celebrity. While associated with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for many years, he also had close relationships with the Vienna Philharmonic, The Berlin Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, among others. As a composer he is noted not only for his symphonies and Mass, but also for more popular pieces such as West Side Story and Candide. And television viewers of a certain age will remember his Young People’s Concerts, as well as his historic performance of Beethoven’s Ninth after the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
