Join us on Thursday August 23 at 6:30, as Stellina finishes our summer “Under the Stars” wine dinner series with a retrospective of one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in California, Napa Valley’s Freemark Abbey.

Weather permitting, this tasting will be held outdoors under the shade of our own grape vines. Five wines will be poured, accompanied by a five-course menu, plus a complimentary dessert course.

The genesis of Freemark Abbey dates back to 1881 when Josephine and John Tychson purchased 147 acres in the Napa Valley. Five years later, after John’s death, Josephine built her original redwood winery on our current site in St. Helena. In addition to her legacy of innovation and hard work, Josephine earned a place in the history books as the first female vintner in California.

Eight decades later, Freemark Abbey helped launch the modern era of California wine. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the winery’s Bosché Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was considered one of America’s most iconic bottlings. Its Chardonnay proved that California could produce stunning world-class wines from this noble variety. Freemark Abbey was one of 12 American wineries chosen to compete in the historic Judgment of Paris tasting in 1976. It was the only producer with entries in both the Cabernet and Chardonnay flights.

Ted Edwards has been Freemark Abbey’s winemaker since 1985. His intelligent approach combined with the sheer length of his experience in the Napa Valley – the Rutherford Bench in particular – makes him one of the region’s leading vintners. KNIGHT’S VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON: 

Nestled in a little valley just north of Napa County, is the Knights Valley AVA. Protected from marine influences, Knights Valley captures the ideal warmth for growing Bordeaux-style varieties on terraced slopes and gently rolling hills. With a long history of making great Cabernet Sauvignons, Freemark Abbey is thrilled to be exploring the diversity of this unique valley, producing a Cabernet that is spicy, concentrated and rich with black fruit flavors.” – Winery

 

NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON:   

Opaque, dark ruby color introduces this wine that expresses dark fruit aroma and flavors. With spicy sweet oak complexity, the wine exudes dark fruit such as blackberry, black currant, blueberry and dark cherry. There are nuances of dark chocolate, chocolate berry truffle dusted with cocoa powder, cola, aromatic cedar, cinnamon, clove, graham crackers and a hint of tobacco. The body is very full with a soft entry, coupled with dark cherry/berry flavors that develop from start to finish. With great texture and mouth feel, this Cabernet is full-bodied, rich and opulent. In one word… delicious.

 

MERLOT:

The dominant flavor of this rich and smooth Merlot is black cherry, with nuances of milk chocolate, integrated spicy oak and arugula. Great balance of fruit, body, tannin and acidity. The depth and richness of flavor provide a smooth profile that delivers from the initial sip and continues on the palate for a long beautiful finish

 

 

 

 

 

 

VIOGNIER:             

Brilliant greenish straw color introduces the floral aroma of jasmine, with grapefruit, peach, apricot, pineapple guava, passion fruit, papaya and toast. The flavor is punctuated with ripe white peach, banana and guava… very pleasant and full with great viscosity and balance. The Freemark Abbey Viognier is a refreshing wine that yields both complexity and a pleasurable lingering experience.
