STEELE WINES owns five vineyards and leases three additional vineyards from the Dorn family, original settlers of Lake County. The winery also buys grapes from established grape growers from Santa Barbara County to Washington State

Jed’s flagship label, Steele, stems from Jed’s passion for chardonnay, pinot noir, and zinfandel, and features vineyard-specific wines from estate vineyards and from other vineyards he’s worked with since the 1970s. Steele varietals now include pinot blanc, viognier, cabernet franc rosé, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, pinot noir, petit verdot, zinfandel and cabernet franc.

In 1999, Jed created Stymie. This is Jed’s homage to his Dad. Only two varieties are produced under the Stymie label: merlot and syrah, sourced from the Silva and Jacobsen properties. These wines represent the best of the best, grown and vinified in Lake County, according to Jed, who feels merlot is underserved in California. “Dan Berger thinks my merlot is one of the best merlots he’s ever had. At the time, there were tons of high-end Cabs, but only one or two high quality merlots.”

FROM THE WINE ENTHUSIAST:

91 POINTS     Steele Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Hills)

“Winemaker Jed Steele keeps his groove going. Full body and a lot of flavor richness make this wine a winner. It nicely combines ripe black-cherry and blackberry notes with a subtle oak spiciness like vanilla and cinnamon on a creamy texture backed by moderate tannins.”

Message from Jed

I’ve been making wine in California for almost 50 years and 2017 is the 25th anniversary of Steele Wines in Lake County. Like many winemakers, I started in the cellar. That was in 1968 at Stony Hill in the Napa Valley. After I earned my enology degree at UC Davis I ended up at Edmeades in the Anderson Valley, then started Kendall-Jackson in Lake County.

The benefit of having been in the wine industry for so long is that you get a lot of experience with grape growers and vineyards across the state. I’ve made wine from just about every wine region in California, from Santa Barbara to Mendocino. We consistently draw on some of the finest vineyards in California.

But our goal was never to be a huge winery. We bottle a lot of different varietals under four unique brands, but most of our wines are made in lots of fewer than 1,000 cases. This reflects my fascination with many diverse varietals and vineyard sites. And staying small means we can practice true craftmanship in the production of all of our wines.

We thank you for your patronage, and hope you enjoy our wines.

Steele Pinot Blanc 2017   Bien Nacido Vineyard

VINEYARDS

Santa Barbara County possesses a unique maritime desert climate which provides just the right combination of daytime warmth and evening cooling to preserve the crisp acidity that makes our Pinot Blanc such a refreshing food wine. The grapes are sourced from Bien Nacido Vineyard outside of Santa Maria; the vineyard block, C, is one of the westernmost on the property and is adjacent to fields of strawberries. The soil is sandy loam, over a layer of ancient sea bed, filled with shells and fossils.

WINE STYLE & TASTING NOTE

Our 2017 Pinot Blanc was fermented in stainless steel tank and then aged in neutral oak barrels for 6 months to provide some weight and mouth feel without taking on too much oak flavor. The wine was bottled in the spring. The fruit from this area tends to have tropical fruit aromas and flavors such as peach, mango and light orange zest. We also find the hallmark green apple, Meyer lemon and honeydew melon character in our Pinot Blanc. The wine is put through malolactic fermentation which delivers a bit of creaminess to the mid palate. The wine finishes with apple, lemon, caramel and honeycomb which leaves you yearning for another sip.

Steele Stymie Merlot 2014 Stymie Vineyard

VINEYARDS

The grapes used to craft the Steele Stymie Merlot are grown at the Stymie Vineyard. Jed purchased this vineyard in 2005 after having sourced fruit from it since 1991. Known for quality fruit, we’ve named this vineyard Steele Stymie Bench Vineyard. It is located on a gravelly bench overlooking the Big Valley area of Lake County. An ideal location for growing Merlot vines.

WINE STYLE & TASTING NOTE

The Stymie Vineyard typically yields a Merlot with a rich, deep red color and firm body, exhibiting aromas of chocolate, jammy fruit, tobacco and pepper. The palate reveals a rich, well-structured wine with layers of ripe red currants, anise, chocolate-covered cherries, a peppery mid-palate, and just a hint of coffee. This high-quality fruit produces an excellent, long-lasting finish and smooth tannins. It’s a perfect “special occasion” wine and pairs well with big hearty foods.

Steele Zinfandel 2014 Catfish Vineyard

VINEYARDS

The vineyard is located on the Bell Hill Road, a part of the Kelsey Bench of Lake County, just south of Kelseyville. Catfish Vineyard, planted in 1901, is head pruned and stands on its own roots. Steele Wines purchased the vineyard in 2000 and we have been working to rehabilitate the old vines since that time. Catfish Vineyard Zinfandel, is actually a field blend of a number of varieties, including small amounts of carignan, alicante bouschet, cabernet sauvignon, petite sirah, and cinsault. Having more than one variety assured the old-time vintners that they would have some grapes to harvest regardless of the spring frosts or autumn storms.

WINE STYLE & TASTING NOTE

We utilize warm temperature fermentations on the Steele Catfish Vineyard Zinfandel. This is followed by 12 months aging in hybrid barrels. The hybrid barrels are unique in that they have alternating staves of French and American oak, which balance the unique flavors of this wine. With volcanic soil and wide variety of grapes in the field blend this wine tends toward a more brambly style. The wine provides a mouth full of bright red fruit, and many layers of jam, coffee, and eucalyptus along with good structure and balance.

Steele Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Beckstoffer Red Hills

VINEYARDS

The Red Hills appellation in Lake County is a new AVA (American Viticultural Area). The iron-rich, red soil of Red Hills is laden with obsidian, a glassy black volcanic rock that glistens in the afternoon sun. Well known Napa Valley grape grower Andy Beckstoffer bought up a piece of the Red Hills AVA, planting it in Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. We have been receiving clone 6 and clone 37 grapes from this vineyard since 2002.

WINE STYLE & TASTING NOTE

The grapes are pressed to stainless steel tank and undergo 2-3 week fermentation with an extended maceration to extract every ounce of flavor. This wine is then laid down in a combination of French and hybrid oak barrels to age for a year and a half. This wine has a rich, fruit-forward elegance. A spicy fruit and berry core backed up by soft tannins makes it a nice glass of wine for casual sipping among friends.

Steele Stymie Syrah 2016 Jacobsen Vineyard

VINEYARDS

The grapes used to craft the Steele Stymie Syrah are sourced from Jacobsenvineyard on Jed’s home property in Kelseyville. Jed planted this small vineyardin 2002. It is made up of 6 acres of Syrah and 1 acre of Counoise. A small amount of Syrah fruit also comes from Fiora vineyard in the northeast corner of Clearlake. Don Fiora planted his Syrah vineyard in 1992. Since the first year ofproduction, Don’s fruit has been exceptional. Annually, it is typically the firstred that we harvest and its consistent quality is something to be recognized.

WINE STYLE & TASTING NOTE

We use special winemaking techniques on the Stymie, including gentle de- stemming and keeping the fermentation temperatures below 90 degrees. This wine is aged in oak barrel for 22 months prior to bottling. The concentrated fruit flavors, smoky undertones and lingering finish make this wine enjoyable now, but it will continue to improve for another 10 years.
