CALIFORNIA COOL WINE TASTING NOTES
COPAIN ROSE (MENDOCINO)
“With a gorgeous hue of pale pink, our 2014 Rosé jumps out of the glass with crisp red fruit flavors. The supple texture is backed by a vibrant freshness and appealing acidity, making this a wonderfully versatile food wine. The 2014 vintage started dry but abundant February rain came just in time to break the winter draught. Warm spring temperatures encouraged an early budbreak that kept vineyard development ahead of schedule through the entire season. Our harvest was condensed beginning September 3rd and concluding on September 24th. For the first time our Pinot Noir and Syrah harvest overlapped. Abundant sunshine and cool evenings created near ideal conditions for ripe and balanced wines with yields falling in the normal range.”– Copain Winery
90 POINTS! Wilfred Wong of Wine.com – “Bright, beautiful and bouncy, the seriously fine 2014 Copaín Tous Ensemble Rosé of Pinot Noir is a clear step above the rest of the pack. Light to medium pink color; very fruity and fresh, strawberries in the aromas, pleasing; medium bodied, dryish, fine acidity, good balance; bountiful, red fruit flavors, pleasing; medium finish, crisp aftertaste.
“One of my favorite California wine producers, Wells Guthrie, like a champion truffle-hunting dog, seems to unearth top vineyards for his wines…”–Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
“...these were among the most vibrant and precise wines I tasted during my Sonoma tour…”–Josh Reynolds, International Wine Cellar
“…his wines are unquestionably from the New World, although there is a complexity and structure to them that even the most diehard French wine enthusiast will admire.”–Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
“Give the glass a few twirls …and the nose opens up revealing aromas of strawberry, mineral and a bit of old world Pinot funk. The palate is round and ripe with ripe citrus, soft berry and crisp apple flavors. The finish is clean and refreshing with lemony acidity making it a great choice for shellfish, lightly dressed spring green salads or simple pastas. When the weather warms up a bit more, it will make a great patio sipper as well.” – The Original Boise Coop
CAMBRIA “BENCH BREAK” PINOT NOIR (CENTRAL COAST)
“Estate defines the culture of Cambria. For more than 25 years, we have produced wines that faithfully express the singular stamp of one of the finest cool-climate crus in California. In this exceptional setting known as benchland, referring to the way the foothills rise up from the valley floor, the ancient, complex soil hosts the vineyards of our estate winery.
Family-owned, sustainably-farmed, and passionately tended by a team proud to be stewards of this remarkable property, each wine we produce is 100% estate, fully revealing the essence of the Santa Maria Bench.
The Pinot Noir is deep, dark purple in color with abundant red fruit and dark berry aromas and flavors. The ever-present underlying earthy character compliments its solid tannin structure and long fruity finish.”– Cambria Winery
“This is another fine Pinot from Cambria, showing the winery’s great price-quality ratio. Words like opulent and elegant come to mind to describe intense flavors of black cherries, licorice, cola, herb tea and Indian spices. It’s bone dry, and also quite tannic, but you can enjoy it now with big, rich lamb and beef dishes, or a wild mushroom risotto. Otherwise, it will continue to improve for at least eight years.“-The Wine Enthusiast
“The dark plum-colored 2000 Pinot Noir Bench Break Vineyard exhibits complex floral, currant, cherry, and blueberry characteristics. The wine is medium-bodied, with well-integrated acidity, wood, and tannin. This beautiful effort is nearly exceptional. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. This is a well-made effort, and is available for a realistic price.” 89 Points- Wine Advocate
KLINKER BRICK “FARRAH” SYRAH (LODI)
“This Syrah features aromas of ripe plum, cacao, and smoky oak with subtle earthy floral notes. The palate is greeted with bright and vibrant flavors of blackberry, anise and exotic spices. Supple tannins and superb balance lend structure to this full-bodied syrah with a long, lingering finish. This Syrah features aromas of ripe plum, cacao, and smoky oak with subtle earthy floral notes.”- THE WINERY
“Farrah Syrah is – if you don’t have a stick up your backside and can appreciate the pleasures of a wine that is purely about the sensual enjoyment of a full-on red – a genuinely dazzling, impressive, and surprisingly wine geek-friendly Syran the glass, it shows the hallmark Lodi ripeness and density.
This is not one of those light ‘n’ elegant deals. Big reds are usually considered lacking some of the nuance and complexity of medium-bodied ones but this is a pleasantly complex, sophisticated red that fills out a truly prodigious fruit character – blackberry liqueur, plums, stewed raspberries, black currants – with a sweet herbal tinge, subtle minerals, and a flattering silkiness from its 15 months of barrel age.”– 94 POINTS!- ThePourFool
ATALON “PAULINES”CUVEE (OAKVILLE, NAPA)
“This wine was crafted from fruit carefully selected from site throughout Napa Valley. Vineyard sites range from fertile clay soils in the heart of the valley near the Napa River to gravelly alluvial soils on the Rutherford Bench, to rocky, mineral-laden soils on both the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain Ranges.
Pauline’s Cuvée is made after the wines of the Right Bank. Merlot and Cabernet Franc lead the way to a soft supple wine with lots of character. Dark Ruby in color. Aromatic notes of black cherry, blackberry, plum, currant, integrated sweet oak, cinnamon and clove spices, and shaved milk chocolate. It has a delicate and soft entry with great depth and balance. It is the definition of soft and velvety! Elegant!”- THE WINERY
63% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon
HARTFORD OLD VINE ZINFANDEL (RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY)
Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1994 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford’s appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast.
Our 80-100 year old Zinfandel vineyards are irreplaceable treasures. We source our vineyard designated Russian River Valley Zinfandels (150-500 cases) from some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California. The complexity and depth of flavors from these vineyards produce the most consistently bold and unctuous Zinfandels found anywhere.–The Winery
“These are always some of the most exciting as well as diverse offerings in my tastings, and I always walk away shaking my head at just how good they are.” – Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate,
“Deep ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented dark berries on the fragrant nose. Shows brighter red fruits on the palate, which offers juicy raspberry and cherry flavors and a hint of candied flowers. Turns more tangy with air and finishes spicy, focused and long, with dusty tannins adding grip” 90 POINTS!.– Vinous, Antonio Galloni
