On Wednesday October 8th at 6:30 Stellina will be honored to present Giovanni Bertani of the legendary Bertani family of vintners, pouring seven wines from their estate Tenuta Santa Maria, located in the Veneto region. Most of these wines are being released for the first time in the Boston market, and this will be your chance to be among the first to try them.

Accompanying these wines will be a four-course tasting dinner, with antipasti and light entrees designed specifically to accompany these wines. Giovanni will explain in detail the growing, harvesting and vinification  procedures, and be available to answer questions.

We are very excited, not only because of Geovanni’s involvement, but because our advance tastings at Stellina indicate the Santa Maria wines to be of the highest quality.Wines produced on the lands of the Tenuta Pieve include both indigenous varieties, such as the Amarone Classico, Ripasso Valpolicella and Soave Lepia, as well as international varieties found in the Decima Aurea Merlot and the Torre Pieve Chardonnay.

The most famous wine of the Veneto and Verona area  is undoubtedly Amarone della Valpolicella, a dark red wine with rich, highly concentrated flavor. For comparison, Giovanni will also offer samples of their younger Valpolicella Ripasso, showing the same flavor profile but within a more accessible framework.

Against the Chardonnay he will offer the ever-popular Soave. The best-known white of the region, the Soave shows a dry, crisp taste and a an almond-scented bouquet.

To finish the series there will be both a “straight” Merlot, as well as a Merlot-Syrah blend.

Cost per person is $40, which includes all wines and four courses of food. Reservations are required. Call 617-924-9475 or go to the reservation page of our website.

Tenuta Santa Maria comprises more than 40 hectares of vineyards which are divided between two estates, the first in the Valpolicella Classico zone and the second in the Illasi Valley.

The Amarone is obtained using the traditional techniques of appassimento, a natural drying process of the grape, and aging, giving it a unique and immediately recognizable taste. It represents the full expression of the Veronese tradition and the more than century-old family heritage.

The wine has a ruby red color with garnet reflections. The impact of preserved cherry, spices, and dried rose petal lend complexity and elegance to the nose. To the palate it has warmth and subtlety, well-structured and with a high alcohol content, balanced by velvety tannins and an elegant acidity and freshness.

Elegant and complex Valpolicella continues the family tradition of the Ripasso method, first used in the 1850s. The style is a consistent expression the indigenous Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone grapes and terroir of the area. The Ripasso method is delicately achieved conducting a secondary extended maceration and fermentation over the Amarone grape skins and seeds, giving the wine higher complexity, bolder and softer body, and intense color.

Reminiscent of the Amarone, the wine is a vivid ruby red color. At the nose, intense memories of cherry, blueberry, licorice and hints of spices, cinnamon and pepper. At the palate soft and warm structured velvet tannins and a very balanced acidity. Long finish with fruity sensations.

An elegant and complex world-class Merlot, obtained from low-yield vineyards with a density of 9500 vines per hectare. The vinification is conducted with a light appassimento and then aged in French barriques.

Deep ruby red, with hints of dried plums and wild berries, accompanied by notes of coffee, eucalyptus and vanilla. Well-structured, soft tannins, well-balanced acidity and consistency. Intense, with a fine liquorice aftertaste.

A fruit-forward and spicy blend of Merlot and Syrah, with an intriguing body. Produced from low yield vineyards with vinification conducted in stainless steel and short bottle fining.

Deep ruby red with violet hues. Elegant and complex aroma with hints of black cherries, red currant, blueberry and a light touch black pepper. Soft tannins and a pleasant acidity are balanced by a deep and full body.

A full-bodied Chardonnay, with great elegance and complexity obtained from three different clones in a densely-planted vineyard. Vinification conducted with fermentation and long aging in French barriques at the winery’s room temperature.

Pale-yellow in color, crystal-clear with a tint of green. Intense perfume, typical of Chardonnay, and an aroma of fresh fruit. Subtle vanilla scents fading into exotic perfumes of pineapple, banana, and citrus and then finishing with hazel-nuts and melted butter. The wine denotes an excellent and elegant refined structure and is well-balanced between acidity and sapidity.

A Soave white obtained from local Garganega varietal with low-yield vineyards and careful attention to vinification, conducted in stainless steel. A pleasant surprise to the palate, with both freshness and depth, giving it and interesting and balanced structure.

Intense straw-yellow. A complex aroma with scents of summer fruits, pears, peaches, herbs, almonds, as well as minerality. The taste is rich and fresh, with a pleasant saltiness that actually intensifies the softness. Mild vanilla taste and good persistency.
